MidSight is our hospital information and advice service for patients attending eye clinics. MidSight Hospital Information Points provide a wealth of information on issues such as eye conditions, NHS Eye Services, making the most of your sight, blind clubs, specialised holiday venues and other sources of local support. Some Midsight Information Points include displays of daily living aids and help is offered in ordering these.
MidSight’s hospital desks are run by our trained volunteers, supported by our professional staff. We work closely with Consultant Ophthalmologists in the eye clinics, providing patients with immediate support when they are registered as blind or partially sighted, or told there is no further help available for their eye condition, ensuring that the patient is aware of all the services that are available to them. Often a chat with one of our staff and a word of reassurance, or a leaflet explaining your eye condition can help when coming to terms with loss of sight. At this point, we can also directly refer a patient for one of our other services.
Jenni Forbes, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Edgware Community Hospital says: We rely on the MidSight volunteers for their help in taking the time to talk to patients with visual disabilities, counsel them and provide a wealth of advice and knowledge about the facilities available locally and nationally to help them.
The MidSight Service offers encouragement to patients about the different ways they can continue to enjoy their lives, even with poor sight. This can make all the difference in how patients and their families cope with the changes and challenges in the future.
